History of College

” Gandhi Medical College in Bhopal stands majestically on the grounds where once Fatehgarh Fort stood in 1722. The serene Lake and the adjacent VIP Road are a major attraction to the site today, but, the scene was quite different when the College first started functioning in 1955 , in the Polytechnic College building on Shamla Hills, after inauguration by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri on 13th August. A year later, on 15th September 1956, the foundation of present building was laid by the then Union Home Minister, Shri Govind Ballabh Pant and finally the beautiful piece of architecture in its present form, the Gandhi Medical College was inaugurated by the first Prime minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru on 13th March 1963.

In 1956, when I was a first year student, our dynamic and visionary Principal, Dr Gopal Krishna decided to hold the first ever ”College Week” – extra-curricular activities, full of sports, drama, music and all sorts of fun and frolic. The first ever Students’ Associations was established and a College Magazine was also introduced that year.
Before all the funfair started, our Principal also decided that the college must have a ‘logo’. Designs were invited through local press and other news media. To my utmost surprise and delight the design submitted by me was selected by the panel of judges – the memory of the day will always remain fresh with me when Principal Dr. Gopal Krishna called me in his office and said, ” Do you realize that your name will remain associated with this college for ever”. It was indeed a very emotional day for me.

In December 2015 on the occasion of celebrating the Diamond Anniversary of our college, I was presented with a plaque, a photo of which I wish to share with you all. I remain deeply indebted to the organizers of the gala event for the honour bestowed upon me.
